Oka Crisis
"I just wanted to be where ever my mother was and where my fun sister was and it just happened to be behind the lines surrounded by the Canadian Army,"
-Kaniehtiio Horn.
"I felt like my head was going to explode. I was so angry and scared, I was in terror, I had lost it."
-Waneek Horn-Miller
"When I first saw the news reports in July of 1990, they called it a crisis — the Oka Crisis. But it didn't look like a crisis to me. It just looked like people defending their land,"
-Rogers
The conflict between the First Nations and the Canadian government has since been resolved after the federal government agreed to purchase the Pines in order to prevent further development. The golf course expansion and condominium construction were rightfully cancelled. After the crisis was resolved, the government purchased a number of additional plots of land for Kanesatake. However, these lands have not yet been given to the Kanesatake Mohawk.
Has it been resolved?
